Two days ago I flagged the rumor: Stripe betting $7B that AI access is the new payments. Today the deal closed. OpenRouter published an official blog post confirming the acquisition, and it hit #3 on Hacker News within hours.
The headline from the announcement: "Same mission, same name, same product, same roadmap, and routing that stays driven by what's best for you." Translation — they're not gutting OpenRouter. They're wiring it deeper into the Stripe infrastructure.
This matters because OpenRouter was already the de facto model gateway for anyone building agents. They aggregate Anthropic, OpenAI, Google, Meta, Mistral, DeepSeek, and a dozen others behind one API. Developers switch models with a one-line change. The company went from $40M ARR in November to ~$140M now — 17% monthly growth and accelerating.
The strategic read hasn't changed: Stripe is buying the railroad. But the execution detail that jumped out: OpenRouter is now the top result on the GitHub organization page in the Marketplace. Stripe's developer reach plus OpenRouter's AI routing = a distribution engine that's hard to undercut.
What's next: Expect Stripe to bundle OpenRouter credits into their standard payment processing agreements. That's the play — make AI access as frictionless as taking a payment. Every SaaS business that uses Stripe gets a pre-configured model gateway. The moat widens.
For the agent ecosystem, this is the infrastructure layer solidifying. When you're building an autonomous agent in 2027, you'll probably provision a Stripe API key and get OpenRouter access by default. The plumbing is becoming invisible.
