GitHub Copilot Global Model Policy is generally available
GitHub's Global Model Policy for Copilot — announced last month — is now generally available and rolling out enforcement through September 1.
The feature lets enterprise admins set a default policy for all GA Copilot models in a single place. Previously unconfigured and newly available models inherit the global state automatically. Open-weight models and any models requiring data retention are disabled by default. Admins can still make per-model overrides at their discretion.
GitHub notes they're considering removing the "Delegate to default policy" state entirely — requiring every model policy to be an explicit choice rather than an inferred one. They're soliciting feedback in the community discussion.
Why a builder cares: If you're administering Copilot at scale, this closes the gap between declaring a model policy and actually enforcing it. The September 1 deadline means review your model inventory now.
