GitHub Consolidates Copilot into a Single Unified Experience

GitHub announced a trio of upcoming changes to Copilot policies and billing that take effect over the next month. If you manage a Business or Enterprise account, there's a hard deadline you need to know about.

What changed. No earlier than September 28th, 2026, GitHub will merge Copilot Chat on github.com, Copilot Chat in GitHub Mobile, and the Copilot cloud agent into a single unified Copilot experience. If your organization opts out of the unified experience, users will lose access to Copilot on github.com and GitHub Mobile entirely.

Separately, GitHub is re-enabling sign-ups for new Copilot Business and Enterprise customers paying by credit card or PayPal starting September 1st — but with strengthened account vetting. Existing customers will see updated billing behaviors from October 1st.

Why a builder cares. If you're a Business or Enterprise admin, you need to review the new unified Copilot policy before September 28th and confirm it reflects how you want to manage access. Letting the deadline slip means your team loses Copilot on the web and mobile surfaces. The billing changes also mean that fully canceling and resubscribing later will trigger the new vetting flow, so plan around that if you're evaluating alternatives.
