GitHub Classroom is now deprecated

GitHub deprecated Classroom as of August 28, 2026. The Classroom website, APIs, and related services have been decommissioned in favor of selected partner solutions.

What changed. This completes the transition announced on May 26. The Classroom website (classroom.github.com) and its APIs are no longer accessible. User accounts, repositories, and organizations created through Classroom are unaffected. However, Classroom-specific data — assignment names, test definitions stored outside repos, LTI-integrated rosters — will be permanently deleted per GitHub's retention policies. GitHub directed educators to partner solutions through the GitHub Educator Community Discussion.

Why a builder cares. If you taught a course using GitHub Classroom, your assignment repositories are safe, but any metadata that lived only inside Classroom is gone. If you built a tool or integration that relied on the Classroom API, it's now dead. The sunset of a free, widely-used education tool is a reminder that platform-dependent teaching infrastructure has an expiration date.
