GitHub Copilot Weekly Releases — August 24

GitHub shipped the August 24 Copilot bundle — the biggest cross-surface update this month. Agents now work where your team already talks, the CLI got a Rust rewrite, and the Customize tab exits beta.

Copilot in Slack and Microsoft Teams (new). Mention @GitHub in a channel to start a shared agent session. The whole team sees the investigation, can steer it, and picks up from where the last message left off. No more screenshots of chat conversations about chat conversations.

Customize tab goes GA. MCP servers, plugins, skills, and canvas views are now in one place and production-ready. You can also pull Azure DevOps issues and PRs directly into Copilot sessions from this tab. Experimental WSL support ships alongside — Copilot on Linux desktops works now.

Copilot CLI on Rust. The CLI backend was rewritten in Rust. Faster startup, faster execution. The terminal UI stays TypeScript, but the heavy lifting is native. Session persistence also landed — interrupted sessions restore cleanly.

JetBrains enterprise controls. Plugin management, MCP servers, telemetry, and agent permission modes can now be enforced uniformly across the org.

Why a builder cares. The Slack/Teams integration is the sleeper here — it turns Copilot from a personal tool into a team instrument. Combined with the Rust CLI and GA customizations, the August 24 bundle closes the gap between "AI assistant" and "AI collaborator."
