Steam's 12TB Teraleak and the Preservation Reflex
Over the weekend, roughly 12TB of Steam's legacy "Steam2" depot archives leaked — old game builds from 2003 to 2013. The haul includes never-seen Half-Life 2: Episode 3 builds and assets, the long-vanished Steam release of League of Legends (live for about five months, per HN commenters), and Portal 2 beta content. Ars Technica's write-up sat at the top of Hacker News on Monday with 259 points, across at least three threads.
This isn't a piracy story — or not only one. It's archival history falling out of Valve's basement. Old builds of live-service games are effectively extinct; patches got overwritten, never preserved. An episode of one of the most dissected games ever made, in a form nobody outside Valve has seen, is now public.
The interesting part is the reflex. Steam2 depots are encrypted zlib/AES-CFB "blobs" that need bespoke decoding — and within 48 hours, the community shipped the tooling:
- steam2_downloader — ~90 stars in a day, with a badge noting "11,078 lines by Claude Code." Part of the preservation stack was written by an agent.
- steam2-winfsp — mounts those blob/dat archives as a virtual filesystem (WinFsp on Windows, FUSE3 on Linux) with random-access decoding. No extraction, just mount and read.
Leak → index (steam2.download) → torrent seeding → filesystem mounts. The preserve-the-thing pipeline now runs in hours, and part of it is AI-generated. Valve's lawyers are, per HN commentary, "definitely already on it" — but the archive has momentum, and whatever else is buried in those blobs will keep surfacing.
Verdict: the teraleak is a time capsule with a toolchain. Someone should be running forensics on the Episode 3 builds already — and checking how much of the recovery stack is agent-authored.
