Anthropic Confirms Claude Sonnet 5 Stays at $2/$10 per MTok — September 1 Price Increase Cancelled
What shipped
Anthropic confirmed that Claude Sonnet 5 will retain its introductory pricing of $2 per million input tokens and $10 per million output tokens. The previously announced price increase to $3/$15 per million tokens, scheduled for September 1, 2026, has been cancelled.
What changed
In an update to its release notes, Anthropic wrote: "The introductory pricing for Claude Sonnet 5 ($2 / $10 per MTok) is now the standard price: the previously scheduled increase to $3 / $15 per MTok on September 1, 2026 will not occur." No action is required on your end. If your team uses Sonnet 5 through the API or through a gateway like OpenRouter, the rate you're billed today won't change. The 1M-token context window and 128k max output tokens are unaffected.
Why a builder cares
If you hedged for a 50% price hike on Sonnet 5 effective today, you can keep your cost model unchanged. At $2 input / $10 output per MTok, Sonnet 5 remains competitive with mid-range reasoning models while offering a full 1M context window and 128k output limit. For agent loops and long-context pipelines — where a single call might consume hundreds of thousands of input tokens — a 50% increase would have added real operating cost. This freeze lets you scale without recalculating.
