GitHub Enterprise Live Migrations from GHES to GHE.com Now Generally Available

What shipped

Enterprise Live Migrations (ELM) is now generally available, moving repositories from GitHub Enterprise Server (GHES) to GitHub Enterprise Cloud with Data Residency (GHEC DR). Announced September 1, 2026.

What changed

ELM continuously syncs data from source to target, so developers keep committing throughout the migration; cutover only has to drain remaining in-flight changes — minutes, not days. It is purpose-built for the largest monorepos: deep git history, high issue and PR volume, round-the-clock activity. Resource-level progress tracking surfaces failures before cutover.

Why a builder cares

No maintenance-window scheduling for business-critical repositories. Geographically dispersed teams can migrate the biggest, most active repos while contributions keep flowing.
