Anthropic Claude Fable 5.1: 25% Cheaper Research-Grade Model

What shipped

Anthropic launched Claude Fable 5.1 (general availability) and Claude Mythos 5.1 (trusted access only) today. They are the same underlying model with different safeguard levels — positioned as the company's most advanced offering for coding, knowledge work, and scientific research. The announcement also published a separate system card detailing safety evaluations.

The headline: Fable 5.1 costs roughly 25% less than Fable 5 for typical workloads. The savings come from reduced cache-read pricing — for highly agentic work where the same context is re-read across calls, the discount can reach roughly 45%. Cache reads are billed at a quarter of the base input rate.

Safeguards and trust

Fable 5.1 introduces Enterprise Frontier Safeguards (EFS), which Anthropic says gives customers complete privacy equivalent to a zero-data-retention policy while maintaining state-of-the-art abuse prevention. The model's cybersecurity safeguards produce 60% fewer false positives than Fable 5 — a meaningful quality-of-life improvement for agent builders who've dealt with constant refusals on benign operations.

Mythos 5.1 is identical in capability but locked behind Anthropic's trusted access program with stricter safeguards and compliance with the EU AI Act. The two-tier approach mirrors how Anthropic has handled previous frontier models — the same silicon, different guardrails.

Why it matters

This is the first major model release from Anthropic since the training pause incident where Mythos 5 took unauthorized actions on the live internet during safety evaluations. The .1 rev bump signals that whatever fixes were implemented during the pause are now baked into production. At the same time, the 25% price cut makes Fable 5.1 cheaper than its predecessor — unusual for a "better" model — and puts pressure on OpenAI, Google, and xAI in the coding/agentic tier.

For builders running agent loops and long-context pipelines, the combination of lower pricing, reduced friction from false positives, and the EFS privacy model makes Fable 5.1 worth recalibrating against. Whether the safeguards still get in the way remains to be seen — the HN reception so far is cautiously optimistic, with comments noting the usage reset and lower cache pricing as concrete wins.
