GitHub Copilot Enterprise Managed Settings Support Any Default Model
What shipped
GitHub's enterprise-managed settings now let Copilot admins choose any model as the default for new conversations. Instead of a fixed default, enterprises can pick the model that best fits their workflows.
What changed
Admins set a preferred default model in enterprise-managed settings, then customize it per team: mark the model key as overridable and update team configuration files in team-mappings.json so individual enterprise teams can choose their own preferred model. Everyone else inherits the enterprise default. The feature is generally available with Copilot Business and Enterprise in the Copilot app, Copilot CLI, and Visual Studio Code.
Why a builder cares
This closes the loop on Copilot model governance. Admins could already restrict models via policy — now they can set the default centrally and let specific teams override it, without touching individual developer settings.
