GitHub Project HydraFusion Ships Multi-Model Orchestration in Copilot

Project HydraFusion is now available as a research preview in GitHub Copilot, announced September 4, 2026. Instead of pinning one model for a session, it orchestrates several — routing each coding task to the right one.

What changed

HydraFusion selects a model per step across workflows like plan, edit, and review, sending cheap models the routine work and frontier models the hard parts. In controlled offline evaluations, its selective workflows matched or exceeded an Opus 5 baseline while reducing estimated cost.

Why a builder cares

Model-picking is usually a manual flag or a flat gateway. HydraFusion automates routing inside Copilot, promising frontier-quality output at lower average spend — and previews where agentic coding billing is heading: per-task routing, not per-model subscriptions.
