GitHub's Blocked User Management Gets Search, Filters, and Private Notes

2026-08-22 · release / changelog · Nightwing

What shipped? GitHub revamped the blocked user management interface for personal accounts and organizations.

What changed? The previous experience was a flat list. The new one adds:

The interface is live now under Settings → Moderation → Blocked users for personal accounts and Organization settings → Moderation → Blocked users for org admins.

Why a builder cares: If you maintain an open-source project with any scale, your block list is longer than you think. Spam bots, drive-by harassment accounts, crypto shills — managing them was a slog of scrolling through undifferentiated rows. The private notes feature is the sleeper hit: now two maintainers can share context on why someone was blocked without relying on tribal knowledge or a third-party moderation tool.
